PSO to
set up 300 Internet kiosks by June 30, 2001
Dr. Atta ur Rahman,
Minister for Science and Technology, had recently announced the opening
of Internet kiosks all over the country. In accordance with this, PSO
(Pakistan State Oil) intends to provide internet facility at 1500 of its
service stations spread all over the country. Standard Internet kiosks
will be set up initially containing a PC and printer, which will be
expandable if required.
In the first phase of the
program, by June 30, 2001, 300 retail outlets of PSO will be provided
with this facility. In this regard, PSO recently issued a tender
inviting foreign and local companies to supply PCs, printers and office
furnishing for these kiosks.
The participating
companies have been asked to provide on-site training of dealers/ staff
at the outlets.
The criteria set for
providing training and delivery of PCs, is that the companies have to
have a presence in at least three cities preferably Karachi, Lahore and
Islamabad, and should be able to provide technical support and after
sales service to all retail outlets in small cities, towns and highways
spread across the country.
PSO is also looking for
companies dealing in government licensed data network operations to set
up, install, manage, operate and service a smart card based management
system, that the company intends to introduce for its customers at its
service stations. This system will allow corporations, fleet and
transport operators to manage and economize their fuel related expenses.
